PAINTINGS
I paint in Oils, Acrylics, Gouache, and Pastels.
Preferred medium is Oils as I love the juicy quality of the paint and the way it responds to being pushed around. Usually work on more than one painting at a time in the studio to allow drying time for overpainting.
Acrylic is good for its fast drying quality and its versatility; thin washes to thickly applied paint. Advantage of being water based.
Gouache for graphics or painted, studies on paper.
Preferred method of painting would be en plein air but the vagaries of UK weather and my advanced years make painting outdoors a rarity. Sketch book studies, supported by my photographs have increasingly been my way of reacting to the subject matter.
The recent advances in technology have opened up a new way of reacting to and recording the outdoor world for me. Using a digital tablet has already proved to be an invaluable aid for drawings and colour studies without the need for carrying cumbersome materials into cities or countryside.
